Can revising be just as fun as leaning TikTok dances?

Have you ever wondered why learning TikTok dances seems so entertaining and enjoyable, but when it comes to revising for a test it seems impossible to recall any details?

Renegade, savage, cannibal, do you recognize any of those popular dances? When dancing it is not only our brain memory that works hard trying to match the pieces together, our muscle memory is involved as well. Neuroscientists claim that when dancing the movements become thoroughly mapped in the brain, creating a link between thinking and doing. Although dance might seem like a lithe body movement, the conscious awareness you first acquire when learning a fresh routine to the automatic performance, makes the brain work twice as much as your body. There is no question that music has a very stimulating effect on our physical activity. However, dance was found to have an effect on your mental wellbeing as well. Music stimulates the brain’s reward centers, while dancing activates its sensory and motor circuit.  Studies show that dance helps reduce stress, releases positive hormone serotonin, and helps develop new neural connections. Surprisingly dance has been found to be therapeutic for patients with Parkinson’s disease as well! Parkinson’s disease resolves in bradykinesia (slow body movement), stiffness if your body, tremors, impaired balance and coordination. Dance provides a great opportunity to alleviate these symptoms.

When learning TikTok dances not only your body experiences a lot of physical benefits, but as well, you develop a feeling of desiarability and popularity. You will be finally able to share your cool dances with your friends. And the common interests you and your pals acquire will make your bond even stronger. Due to the ever-growing fame of TikTok, learning dances will become more acclaimed. And coming to school with just a bit of hype will escalate your self-esteem. This is part of the reason why learning new dances seems so fun!

Wouldn’t it be wonderful if your brain experienced the same joy and delight while revising for a test? Unlike learning TikTok dances when revising you don’t have the ability to stand up and mess around with your friends. Personally, I like revising, as couple of days of hard work will solidify my test result. Different parts of our brain are responsible for helping us remember. When you learn something new, a group of neurons activates in a part of the brain called hippocampus. You can think of it as light bulbs turning on. What you would think is remembering, is actually your hippocampus storing many new patters every day. The rate at which hippocampus stores new information increases hugely when revising. If your brain provides a right trigger, the hippocampus should be able to remember anything you want. However, when you keep studying and forcefully learning new information, your brain might get overworked with information. This is what happens when you try to remember a piece of revision all at once, you think you’ve committed a new fact to memory, while actually you forget the material 15 minutes later. Just like many researches show, revising should be a continuous habit, rather than trying to learn a hard material 5 minutes before an exam.

Even though there are different ways of memorization, you memorize best when the work brings you enjoyment. That is why I believe even if the task is tedious and dull, always look on the bright side and find a positive approach in everything you do!
